When job seekers read a job ad, many ask themselves one question: “Do I tick every single box?”
If the answer is no, they often move on. But here’s the truth: very few employers expect candidates to meet 100% of the listed criteria. In fact, many of our clients across Cairns and Townsville are more interested in potential, attitude, and adaptability than in checking off every skill.
Welcome to the 90% Rule – if you meet most of the requirements (roughly 80–90%), you should absolutely apply.
Perfection Is a Myth in Recruitment
Many job ads are wish lists, not checklists.
Employers are aiming high, but they know that a great hire is rarely a perfect one. It’s common for successful candidates to be hired based on a strong foundation and the ability to grow into the rest.
At Signature Staff, we’ve seen plenty of cases where candidates with slight gaps were hired because they showed:
– A proactive mindset
– Great communication
– Eagerness to learn
– Cultural alignment with the team
How to Apply When You Don’t Meet 100%
If you meet most of the criteria but not all, focus on:
– Transferable Skills: Show how past experiences relate to what they need.
– Growth Potential: Mention your willingness to train, adapt, and improve.
– Tailored Applications: Customise your resume and cover letter to highlight strengths.
– Confidence: Don’t apologise for the gaps — show how you’re ready to bridge them.
What Employers Really Want
Beyond skills, employers are asking:
– Will this person show up, step up, and fit in?
– Are they resilient, reliable, and a team player?
– Can they grow into this role and possibly the next?
These questions matter just as much as hard qualifications.
Common Exceptions to the Rule
There are times when meeting 100% *is* necessary:
– Licensing or legal requirements (e.g., certifications in aged care or trades)
– Specialised technical roles that require niche tools or platforms
In these cases, it’s important to meet the minimum standards. But for most roles in hospitality, admin, retail, and even many professional sectors — potential wins.
