Let’s be real: a job description is much more than just a list of tasks. It’s the first impression we give to a potential team member, and we want it to be a good one! So, let’s make those descriptions irresistible.
Job Title: Precision and Clarity
Let’s start with the title. Make sure they know what it’s about! No convoluted titles, a straightforward “Data Analyst” or “Marketing Coordinator” will do. Pay attention to details like spelling and grammar, a small mistake can give a bad impression.
Role Purpose: What Will They Achieve Here?
Don’t just stick to the tasks, tell the story of how this person will impact the company. How will they contribute to the team’s success? Be transparent about the hierarchical structure, who will they report to?
Functions and Responsibilities: The Day-to-Day in Detail
Responsibilities should be organised by functional areas, making it easier to understand the scope of the position. Give them an idea of what their daily, weekly, and monthly routine will be like. And, very importantly, define how success will be measured, KPIs are essential for objectively evaluating success in the role.
Candidate Profile: Competencies and Attributes
Of course, skills and experience are important, but don’t forget about relevant certifications. And think about your company culture, what kind of person fits here? Creative, proactive, communicator?
The Agreement: Everyone on the Same Page!
Formalising the role agreement by having both parties sign the document ensures understanding and acceptance of the responsibilities of the position.
Critical Considerations
Watch out for this, zero discrimination, avoid any language that could discriminate based on religion, race, sex, age, disability, or national origin. And remember, experience should be considered as a factor, but not as an exclusionary requirement. Talent has no age!
